DEVIL'S PAINTBOX
Aiden,
15, and Maddy, 13, the only surviving members
of a Kansas pioneer family, are taken in by
Jefferson Jackson, an older man looking for “strays”
to work in the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest during the gold rush in British Columbia.
Along the way, Aiden befriends Tupic, a young
Nez Perce Indian guide who rescues him from drowning.
In return, Aiden forms an outlaw gang to steal
the smallpox vaccine—which Indians are not
allowed to have—from the white man so that
Tupic’s tribe can be saved.
