Iain McCalman is Professor of History at the University of Sydney, General Editor of THE OXFORD COMPANION TO THE ROMANTIC AGE, and author of seven other books, including THE SEVEN ORDEALS OF COUNT CAGLIOSTRO, (2003) (also published as THE LAST ALCHEMIST in ANZ by Harper Collins).

His forthcoming book, DARWIN'S ARMADA: The Story of Four Voyagers to the Southern Oceans and their Battle for the Theory of Evolution, will be published by W.W. Norton in 2009.

He works also with documentary film and was in 2007 awarded an Order of Australia for services to history and the humanities.
